Many of the brothel madams were kind hearted. For instance, Madame Pauline, on hearing of a desperate family in dire straits, provided them a house and a job for the father. In the west, the bawdy house girls filled an obvious need or they wouldn't have survived. Many girls left the trade as soon as they could, usually by marriage. Others became hooked on drugs or committed suicide.

The Bawdy House Girls (Audible Audio Edition) Alton Pryor, Joe Van Riper, Stagecoach Publishing Books Reviews
it was interesting and informative for anyone who is curious about how cities were populated and grown as our west was won and inhabitated.
A little dry, but worth the read. History taken down the seedy side of the street.
A book that definitely makes you think about how it was for women in "the good old days". I really did enjoy it.
interesting, to the point about the whores of the past. good reading, well written, and enjoyable.
An interesting subject. What it didn't cover was how they tried to keep themselves free of v.d., and the ways they kept themselves from getting pregnant or what happened to their children when they did.
Som e tales interestng, few made a impression. Still, a picture of what life was like when the houses were not hidden
He is a good writer and captures the history in short chapters. Whets the appetite to find out more.
This was a decent book about prostitutes in the 19th century American West. My main complaint (and the reason for the three star rating) has to do with the brevity of the chapters. If this book were an encyclopedia, such short chapters would be warranted. But there's nothing encyclopedic or complete about what Pryor puts on display here. We get short descriptions and brief anecdotes (most of which, by the way, are treated in greater length in more thorough, superior books) and the author moves on to another subject, another "working girl" or madam, sometimes just when a story is about to get interesting.
There is some quality info here, and some humorous and fascinating tales, but if you're going to read just one book on the subject, don't let this one be it. A far superior work is "Daughters of Joy Sisters of Misery" by Anne Butler. Ms. Butler really did her homework, and marshals a mountain of evidence to present her picture of prostitution on the American frontier in the 19th and early 20th centuries. She manages to both entertain and educate, whereas Alton Pryor only does a marginal job on the first account, and is entirely remiss in the second capacity.
Ultimately an interesting, uneven work.
